i was talking to a friend of mine (straight) that also likes kotlc about queer rep (or more accurately, lack thereof) and headcanons and im gonna list the ones she saw and didnt really see.

marella: this was the one she definitely saw/wanted the most and agreed that even if she doesn’t personally ship marelinh, its an awesome and cute ship (i ship it) and loved the opposites attract vibes (water and fire) (hc as pan)

sophie: she didnt fully see it at first, but i brought up the number of times that sophie describes biana’s lips and just her in general, and she agreed that sophie is queer (hc as bi)

fintan and bronte: (keeping as one section bc they give both us us the vibe that theyre exes) she definitely agreed straight away that both are giving bitter exes and that they were both mega fruity. also talked to her about characters shannon, if she made any queer, that fintan could (bc hes evil and all that, so it wouldn’t be any of the ‘good’ main characters) (no specific hc for bronte but we both agree that fintan wouldnt date women)

elwin: i brought up elwin bc i project heavily on him for my hc, she agreed (after explaining what i meant) that he def was it and also neurodivergent (hc as aroace)

della: ‘she is too girlboss to be straight’ -my friend. there wasnt too much discussion other than saying that she gave the vibes and there was something between her and livvy (hc as pan)

livvy: similar to della, my friend and i actually disagreed on what she was, i thought lesbian but my friend says bi or pan,

quinlin: another case of ‘not at first, but sorta saw it with my reasons’ for him, i brought up the ship of qualden. she laughed and said alden was wayyy too straight. we compromised on quinlin having a crush/gay longing when i meantioned a tumblr post (i think) i saw where they compared desc. of alden by quinlin and desc. of fitz by sophie (very similar)

edaline: i was kinda shocked, wasn’t expecting it but i actually like it. (hc bi but pref to men)

tiergan and prentice: she said that she kinda saw it for teirgan the whole time she read it, could see it for prentice but also reasoned with that he had a wife so he has to be atleast bi. we talked about tiertice, once prentice was healed, co-parenting wylie and anyone who decides they wanna live at solreef. (hc tiergan as gay and prentice as bi)

what’s something about Kotlc that the books/readers gloss over?

(oh this is gonna be long) to preface, i understand why most people gloss over this, and the only reason i notice is because of the adoption in my family, but its just something in kotlc thats so deeply important to me, and its the reason i love the series as much as i do.

kotlc is the only series ive ever read that has realistic, non stereotypical, adoption, where the main focus isn’t on adoption. most stories with a premise that focuses on something other than adoption, would pretend like the main characters biological parents/who raised them, where non existent after the first book. the main character would call their new parents mom and dad quickly and there would be no issues. because obviously adoption is all sunshine and rainbows.

in keeper it takes time for Sophie to even feel comfortable calling Havenfeild home, Eda and Grady struggle with adopting a new child who looks so much like their dead daughter. Sophie struggles with missing her family and feeling like she’s replacing them. it takes multiple books for Sophie to call them mom and dad consistently and for them to properly act like a family. thats how i should be, it takes time to feel like someone is a part of your family

adopting someone into your family is like falling in love, it happens slowly, then all at once, before they become apart of your heart for the rest of your life.

and thats what keeper did, she captured the feeling of adoption perfectly, without making it the main plot, it just happens in the background and i will forever love that

but…Tam, not even go evil, but what if he had been so badly manipulated by the neverseen that he switched sides, what if he actually was a traitor, how would Linh feel, how would Teirgan feel, just imagine the effects that would have on everyone. how hard it would be to fight their friend, their brother in battle.

i mean we already have, Oralie, the Twins, Wylie, the Ruewens,

and Brant and Jolie’s story is literally a tragedy (@crymeariveronceagain i am right about that right?)

Kotlc is a series sprinkled with tragedies throughout you just have to look, they’re there, most of them are just hidden in the background.

Tam was sitting on the couch at Teirgan's house. There was a knock at the door.

"Come in," he called.

The door opened to reveal Marella with the tiny braids in her hair and her rumpled tunic. She scanned the room.

"Is Linh here?" she asked.

"No." Tam shook his head. "She's at Wylie and Prentice's place. She should be back in a little bit, though, if you wanna wait. It'll be about thirty more minutes."

"That's fine." She plopped on the couch opposite of him.

Tam went back to the book he was reading before Marella came in. Although he wasn't sure what to do, just sitting there with his sister's best friend.

Marella must've sensed the awkwardness, too. She started to tap her fingers on the side table, bobbing her head along to the beat with pursed lips.

"Soo," she eventually said, breaking the silence. "Watcha doing."

"Reading." He held up the book in his hands. "What did you think I was doing with it? Having a staring contest?"

"Well, excuse me for trying to start a conversation."

Tam narrowed his eyes at her, but they widened when his gaze landed on her hands. "Umm, you're smoking."

She reeled on him. "What did you just say to me?"

"No," he pointed to her hands, which started to have thick black clouds emitting from them. "You're legit smoking."

"Oh, shoot!"

She started shaking her hands as if drying them off. It didn't work. She darted to the kitchen sink.

Tam dropped his book and followed her. He made it just in time to see Marella's hands sparking, stading helplessly by the sink, too afraid to touch anything in case of starting a fire. He turned on the faucet and guided her hands under the rushing water.

That seemed to do the trick. The sparking stopped, and the smoking was replaced by a steaming hiss. Marella let out a sigh of relief.

"You good?" Tam asked. Marella nodded.

They both noticed he was still holding onto her wrists. Tam snatched his hands back to himself. They both flushed.

"Thanks," Marella murmured.

"Of course. Don't need you burning the house down." He let out an awkward chuckle.

She raised her eyebrows. "Don't make me burn the bangs right off your forehead, buddy. You know I'll do it."

Tam raised his hands in surrender. "Ok, ok. Understood."

His eyes drifted back to her hands. "So, how's your sessions with Fintan been."

She crossed her arms across her chest. "He's being stubborn, as per usual. Ability wise, it's going. Making progress. Not as much as I'd like, but that's just how it is."

He leaned against the counter. "Understandable. I sometimes wish I wasn’t as powerful as I am. It's... scary knowing how far I could go if I lose myself."

He stared at his slightly discolored wrists. They were left from the bonds lady Giselle had installed on him to make him behave. The constant reminder of what he was capable of. The constant torcher of fighting against the guilt of what he'd done. He shuddered.

Marella snorted. "We have exact opposite problems. You would benefit from having less control over shadows, and I'd benefit from having more control over fire." She looked down. "But, I get what you mean. I'm terrified of becoming corrupt like Fintan and Brant. Honestly, I feel like the council is mostly to blame for this. Fintan didn't go insane until pyrokenesis was banned. And I'm not saying what he's done was right, but..."

"I know what you mean," Tam agreed. "Our abilities are a part of us. We can't help that. I also understand people's fears about fire, but I just think that means more training programs by the council could help. People shouldn't have to repress their abilities. I don't understand why some abilities have to be banned or shunned." His eyes tilted down. "It's really not fair."

"Y'know, maybe we have more in common than we thought," Marella told him. "People don't really like shades either, do they?"

He shook his head, then brushed his bangs out of his eyes. "I get that it's freaky. I'm not saying it isn't. I just wish people wouldn't look at me and go, 'Oh, that's a shade, he's up to no good'. But I guess you know what that's like."

"I do." She paused to softly laugh. "We should make a club for people with distrusted abilities. For all the Pyrokinetics, Shades, Inflictors, and Mesmers of the Lost Cities. Heck, even the other elemental abilities. They get a bad rep, too sometimes."

Tam smiled. "I'm down for that. When do you wanna start? We can try to get Linh in on this, too."

"Next week if that's cool with you. And that'd be awesome. I'll talk to her about it when she gets back."

"Works with me."

Marella chuckled. And, wow. The way her eyes twinkled and the way the light reflected off her copper plaited hair. Was she always that good looking. Even usually looking like she was rushing while getting ready, something about it made Tam's face suddenly feel warm.

She didn't seem to notice. Or, maybe she did. Because when Linh came through the door a couple of seconds later, she tossed her unruly curled over her shoulder and went to greet her friend. It almost seemed... flirty. Was it? It definitely was. She tossed him a wink and a teasing smile.

He tugged his bangs back over his eyes and turned away to hide himself. There was no way he was going to let himself get a crush on his sister's best friend. Not happening.

But it was too late.

Wylie keeptober fic

I was two the first time I really hung out with her, what started as a one time babysitting job for a few hours turned into seeing her every week to seeing her almost every two days. Jolie would either come over to Solreef or me and my dads would go over Havenfield, I even got to see her dorm a few times. She was more like a cousin or a sister than a family friend. I got to meet all her friends which I loved and her boyfriend who I always got a bad vibe from. I just didn't understand why until much later. Some of my favorite toys and stories were from her, not to mention songs.

I remember my dad Prentice getting a call in the middle of lunch and rushing out of the house near tears, my other dad Teirgans stressed expression telling me ever was fine and to finish eating. I remember going over to Havenfeild a few hours later and Ediline holding me while sobbing. I was so confused why everyone was so upset and even more confused why everyone started crying harder when I asked where Jolie was.

I was three when I went to her planting, I still didn't fully understand that I would never see my best friend again. I just got that she was gone. I looked at the ground for most of it, holding my dads hands with Jolie's parents next to us. At the end of the planting I gave the tree a big hug and ran to keep up with my parents with tears in my eyes. I didn't see Edaline and Grady much after that day, I forgot details about Jolie but I never forgot her. I only knew her for a little more than a year but she made a bigger impression than people I've known for five plus.

okay so. if you’re asking if it’s canon, Shannon Messenger has not said in the kotlc books or anywhere else that Tiergan is gay.

however, that being said, the way he talks about and interacts with Prentice is very easily read as him being in love. (I can provide examples if you want.)

and the fun part about fandom is that you can imagine characters any way you want. personally, I see Tiergan as gay, and honestly no one will convince me otherwise.
